CONSERVING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES
National Apartment Association & National Multi Housing Council studies have shown that residents us 6-27% less water with a utility billing program. The Environmental Protection Agency encourages property owners to charge for water usage in order to stimulate water conservation. Water and gas conservation are both essential for helping our economy and the environment. These natural resources are non-renewable and in limited supply. Supply options of water have become limited due to population demands and low amounts of water on our local reservoirs and aquifers. Our landfills are filling up and although recycling programs have grown exponentially in recent years, more and more demand is being placed on our landfills due to population growth.
CONSERVATION SUGGESTIONS & FACTS
In the future this may ease up as alternate fuels are explored and more water and power plants are built, but until then we all will have to do our part to conserve our natural resources. There are steps you can take to conserve gas and water. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues and other similar waste in the trash instead of the toilet. Take shorter showers to save water and gas. Don't let the water run while you are washing or shaving your face. Brush your teeth while waiting for the water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin. When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink with soapy water. Quickly rinse under a slow-moving stream from the faucet. Stop throwing away unwanted catalogs and junk mail. Call the companies and ask to be removed from their mailing lists. The average household uses enough water in a year to fill a five foot deep, 32 by 16 foot in ground swimming pool four times over. Americans send 160 million tons of household and commercial trash to landfills a year.
